http://www.lmresin.com/s49a.asp?ID=14 <== la source de l'imageThe Yugoslav Aircraft industry was, for the most part, loated and destroyed during the subsequent occupation, and many skilled personnel lost their lives, but before the end of 1944. a determined effort was being made to ressurect the industry and the Ikarus, Rogožarski and Zmaj concerns were soon undertaking overhaul work. An ambitious programme was initiated for the design and construction of various types of training, liason and sport aircraft as vell as a fighter S-49A.
Some urgency was attached to this type as, following its break with the Soviet bloc, Yugoslavia had been thrown upon its own resources for weaponry. In only 11 months based on the Ik-3 conctruction and mixed vith the Yak-3 VK-105 PF 2 powerplant is produced S-49A, developed by the same engineers, Lj. Ilic, K. Sivcev, S. Zrnic and new team member S. Popovic. In June 1949. first flight of the S-49A was occured and 45 serial aircrafts, including prototype was delivered untill 1951. to the 204. and 117. Regiment in Zemun. Both regiments are transfered to the Nis and Skoplje when in 1957. are withdrawn from the use.
The reconstruction of the Ik-3 airframe was made in the fuselage shape, changing the canopy in the Yak style, moving the radiator further back, modifying the undercarriage legs and taking the engine originally intended for the Yak-3. In fact, 45 surplus Yak-3 engines were available on thestock. The new engine add some 27 km/h to the top speed of the Ik-3. Armament is also changed to the Soviet standards, 20 mm SVAK cannon and two 12,7 mm UBS machine guns which improved fire power.
One Ikarus S-49A, No 2319/19 is in Yugoslav Aviation Museum collection and still waiting to be restored.
Structural data: Steel tube fuselage structure with metal and fabric covering. Wooden wing and tail structure. Fully retractable main and rear undercarriage. Yakovlev style sliding canopy.

--> TooColl et Blackbird : XF108 Rapier c'est OK ! Rien à redire !
In 1955, USAF launched the program of LRIX (Long-Range Interceptor Experiment), that the fighter was to be capable of March 3 performance and could destroy attacking Soviet bombers over the poles before they could get near U.S. territory. It was also to be the escort fighter for the XB-70 bomber. As the XB-70 was developed and built by North American Aviation, the company was also issued a contract for two prototypes which designated F-108A Rapier. The F-108A was designed as a large delta-winged aircraft, powered by a pair of after burning turbojets. A mockup was inspected in January 1959 with planned first flight in 1961. However, by mid 1959, the threat from Soviet Union was perceived to be its intercontinental ballistic missiles instead of its force of long-range bombers. Against the ballistic missiles, F-108 would be completely useless. The program was cancelled on September 1959.

XF103 OK! OK! Happy Birthday to You! By the way are you really a Blackbirder Man!BlackbirdSR71 a écrit :Republic XF-103 Thunderwarrior
(encore reveillé car c'est mon annif )
In 1949, U.S. Air Force introduced the new "weapons system" concept, in which consisting of the air-to-air guided missiles, fire control system and the "1954 interceptor" capable of supersonic flight. The project was designed to intercept the new Soviet intercontinental bombers. In 1951, Air Force announced that the Convair's YF-102 and the Republic's XF-103 were selected for the airframe part of the project. A Model AP-57 mockup was inspected in 1953. Republic received a contact for 3 prototypes. It was adopted a dual-cycle propulsion system, a turbojet and a ramjet were installed tandem in the aft fuselage. Normal cruise were powered by turbojet. At high speed, the thrust of the turbojet was to be augmented by a ramjet. Due to a lot of development problems, difficulties of titanium fabrication structure, engines delay and cost overruns, Air Force deemed that the XF-103 was no longer a possible operational "1954 interceptor". The program was finally cancelled in 1957.
