ZH103 was airborne from Waddington at 1106hrs local time, headed initially for Lajes in the Azores. It was due to be followed soon after by ZH106, which reported engine start about five minutes after the first aircraft but shut down again just before 1200hrs, having been delayed due to flight plan issues. It was rescheduled for departure around 24hrs later.
