Henry Allingham celebrates his 112th Birthday with a Battle Of Britain Fly-Over at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire, north east Britain, 06 June 2008. The Royal Airforce veteran was born on 06 June 1896 in Clapham, south London. He joined the Royal Naval Air Service as an Air Mechanic Second Class in 1915 before being involved in the battle of Jutland ad is the only known survivor. I 1917 henry was promoted to Air Mechanic First Class before being posted to the Western Front, maintaining Sopwith Camels, Pups and Triplanes. After a spell inDunkirk, Henry transferred to the new Royal Air Force in 1918 and served his remaining days in France until the end of the First World War. During the Second World War henry was in a reserved occupation working on counter measures on new German magnetic mines. He was married for 53 years and fathered two daughters who have given him six grandchildren, sixteen great Grandchildren, nineteen Great Great Grandchildren and two Great, Great Great Grandchildren. He is the last surviving member of he British Air Services and the founder member of the Royal Airforce.
