Jet scare computer flaw

Preliminary investigations into a Malaysia Airlines mid-air jet scare near Perth on August 1 have revealed the plane's onboard flight computer increased power to the engines because it believed the plane was travelling too slowly.
The Boeing 777 plane, carrying 177 passengers from Perth to Kuala Lumpur, had to return to Perth after plunging 200m shortly after takeoff at 4.47pm.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau, in its latest summary of flight incidents, said the crew of Flight 124 noticed unusual airspeed indications during the plane's climb, which set off system warnings.
"The pilot in command manually flew the aircraft but was unable to disconnect the auto-throttle which sensed a low-speed condition and increased thrust on the engines," the summary said. "The aircraft was returned to Perth and landed without further incident. The investigation is continuing."
An ATSB spokesman said the bureau had no further comment.
Malaysia Airlines did not return calls yesterday.
But the ATSB entry seems to confirm reports from passengers that the plane's engines were heard to accelerate and decelerate hard, which could have led to passengers' experience of the plane shuddering violently in mid-air and plunging 200m.
The ATSB spokesman confirmed a preliminary report on the incident was due by the end of this month.
